New Publication from the INTELHEART Project

We are pleased to announce a new scientific paper by INTELHEART researcher Andrej Preveden and colleagues, contributing to the project’s growing body of cardiovascular research.

 

“Differences in clinical presentation between heart failure patients with reduced and preserved ejection fraction – analysis of the INTELHEART database”

 

This retrospective, multicentre study analysed 2,156 heart failure patients from four Serbian medical institutions (2003–2023), comparing two distinct phenotypes: heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

 

The study revealed significant differences between the two groups. HFpEF patients were older and more frequently female, with higher rates of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and obesity. HFrEF patients, on the other hand, showed greater left ventricular dilation, more frequent prior myocardial infarction, and significantly elevated NT-proBNP, troponin, and CRP levels.

 

These findings underscore the importance of distinguishing between HF phenotypes for early recognition, accurate risk stratification, and tailored treatment strategies — key goals of the INTELHEART project.

 

Work like this is a vital step in pushing the boundaries of our scientific understanding. By building a clearer picture of how heart failure manifests differently across patient populations, we move closer to a future where diagnoses are more precise, treatments are better matched to individual patients, and outcomes improve.
